The TGO has a piece on what’s now been termed ‘fly camping’, buying into ‘a generally accepted narrative’ (is the AI at work?) that this behaviour started in COVID. This is simply not true, this type of behaviour has always been with us, the only thing that has changed dramatically in COVID is participation numbers. It’s also been made worse by the obsession with, and proliferation, of cheap outdoor equipment, in which the Outdoor Industry, which includes magazines like the TGO, is directly complicit. I have commented on this before, as well as on the general unsustainability of modern outdoor practices at scale (links in the linked post), so I am not going to repeat myself, but the industry’s unwillingness to own it’s own turd is frustrating.
